By Trisha Manning-Smith Published: Sep 23, 2011 at 5:28 PM PDT

SEATTLE -- Lunch at their favorite Noodle Soup Restaurant regularly lures Sharon and Jingwan to Seattle's International District. But dinner is a different matter.
"We still come here to shop and eat. But after dark, it gets a little scary," said Jingwan Zhang.
But Rick Van-Velkinburgh says safety issues are also ramping up in broad daylight.
"I was accosted by a bum yesterday as I sat here and ate lunch," he said. Just last week, a sniper fired a BB gun on parkgoers in the International District. And in recent years, news cameras have captured numerous crack deals in a local park.  Read more...

It's a neighborhood where traditions run deep, where residents still walk to the grocery, the pharmacy and the beauty shop on the corner.

In Seattle's Chinatown International District (ID) — one of the city's oldest neighborhoods — nearly 70 percent of residents are foreign born, many are elderly and about two-thirds are considered linguistically isolated because they speak little or no English.

Picture
